The original "Purple Sage 'n The Desert" design is a 4' x 8' Acrylic on Wood painted by Phyllis Mae Richardson Fisher!  The "purple sage" depicted in this picture goes by several names.  According to Texas A&M's database for Native Plants of Texas the Leucophyllum frutescens is commonly known as "Texas Sage, Texas Ranger, Texas Rain Sage, Cenizo, Texas Silverleaf, Ash-bush, Wild Lilac, Purple Sage, Senisa, Cenicilla, Paol Cenizo & Hierba del Cenizo."  Painted in 1988, you could look almost anywhere along the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass, Texas and find this scene!
